dc.description The concept of ‘development’, associated with the economic growth of a country, became widespread especially after the Second World War. That of ‘sustainable development’, which adds the idea of sustainability, was created in the 1980s by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and came into common use once it was included in the Brundtland Report, prepared in 1987 by the United Nations Commission on Environment and Development. The English term sustainable development used in this report gave rise to several designations used today in many languages, including Romance languages. Since then, the concept of ‘development’ has been constantly evolving and there have been many attempts to redefine ‘sustainable development’. Recognition of the inseparable three-dimensional nature of sustainable development (environmental, social and economic), related to global economic growth, has spread widely and become an unavoidable concern. In this context, the Pan-Latin Terminology Network (REALITER) in collaboration with the Office québécois de la langue française (OQLF) has promoted the development of the Pan-Latin Sustainable Development Vocabulary. Starting from the French language, the Vocabulary contains terms in seven Romance languages (Italian, Catalan, Spanish, French, Galician, Portuguese, Romanian) and in English. In the case of Portuguese, the equivalents used in Brazil are also included.
